Through the eyes of a child – what lessons can we learn as architects?

We can learn a lot about design from children. They teach us to appreciate how differently we all view the world and the built environment around us.

As a parent, and as someone who used to design schools, it’s no surprise to me that kids don’t always react the way we expect.

If you give them a reading nook, they’ll use it as a fort. If you give them a green wall for growing herbs, it becomes a playscape for dinosaurs.

As architects, we have a responsibility to our children.

Let’s create suburbs with houses that leave space for meaningful gardens for our children to live, learn and grow.

Let’s create suburbs where our children are surrounded by spaces that inspire imagination.

And, let’s create suburbs to encourage our children to foster a connection with their country, with their story, and with the environment.
