The Warm Embrace
CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA
Like so many of our projects, The Warm Embrace started with the need to make some updates to a much loved family home.
The dwelling presented a quiet, elegant face to the street, with a beautiful garden in a quiet cul de sac. The original kitchen design left little space for gathering for family meals, or with larger groups, and felt cut off from the large garden. More efficient bathroom and laundry design was needed, as well as the addition of a new primary bedroom.
The final design creates a home that works just as well when gathering as a family of four as it does when entertaining larger groups. The dining room was repositioned to take up the original kitchen location, allowing a new kitchen to be added on the southern side of a newly formed entertaining courtyard. The adjustment also allows for a quiet library, walk in pantry and (our favourite) a libation station.
Creating the northern side of the new courtyard is the addition of a primary bedroom, robe and ensuite. All spaces open to the courtyard, including the generous laundry, celebrating the everyday life within the house as much as the special occasion gathering.
Updated bathroom and finishes throughout leave the much loved home with a whole new chapter ahead of it, and spaces that feel like a warm embrace as you enter at the end of each day.
